Basilica of San Lorenzo Florence

The city’s oldest church, innovative project by Brunelleschi

Florence's Basilica of San Lorenzo was constructed by Brunelleschi in 1423. In complete contrast with those churches built previously, which were dark and mystical places, Brunelleschi's building is quite flooded with natural light.

Inside the Basilica, visitors can admire the Laurenziana Library and paintings by Donatello, Rosso Fiorentino, Bronzino and Desiderio da Settignano. The tombs of the Medici Family are housed within the Sagrestia Nuova.
