Brunelleschi's Dome
The most famous construction in Florence, symbol of the culture of the city
Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, the construction of the Dome of the Florence Cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, iniziated in 1420 and was completed in 1436. Brunelleschi invented innovative techniques based on his knowledge of Roman buildings, and took into consideration a variety of aesthetic, technical and cultural issues. The dome with a diameter of 41,50 meters, was built in such a way as to support its own weight.
Inside the Cathedral, the vaults of the Dome were decorated with a fresco depicting the "Last Judgement", by Federico Zuccari and Giorgio Vasari. Today, the Dome is the most famous construction in Florence, symbol of the artistic and cultural traditions of the city.
