Museum of San Marco Florence
A perfectly intact 15th century monastery
The museum of San Marco is situated within the Dominican Convent commissioned by Cosimo Vecchio de' Medici in the 15th century. Clearly inspired by the designs of Brunelleschi, the edifice is one of very few convents of the period to have survived intact over the centuries. It was within these walls that influential religious and political figures such as Gerolamo Savonarola and Beato Angelico spent much of their lives.
Among the important works of art to be found here, Ghirlandaio's "Last Supper" and the numerous frescoes painted by Fra Angelico are perhaps the best known. A fascinating collection of manuscripts is housed within the convent library (the first to be opened to the pubic in the Renaissance period).
