Parco delle Cascine Florence
Originally a wild rural area, now a park open to the public with dedicated areas for sporting activities
Parco delle Cascine takes its name from the cattle farms once situated on land which was to become one of Florence's most extensive parks and public gardens. Until the mid 18th century the Parco delle Cascine was only open to the general public on Ascension day.
It was the Duchess Elisa who donated the land to the city of Florence in the 18th century, thus providing the population with a vast green area, just moments away from the historic center. In the 19th century, sporting facilities, including professional running tacks, were built here. The Parco delle Cascine is dominated by a large, tree-lined avenue known as the "Stradone del Re" or 'King's Road".
