Santa Maria del Fiore Florence
The most famous construction in Florence, symbol of the culture of the city.
Florence Cathedral, dedicated to St Maria del Fiore, was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio and built in Gothic style in 1367. The buildings houses works of art of the Italian Renaissance such as the frescoes, paintings, statues and lunettes, doors bronzes by artist such as Donatello, Paolo Uccello, Ghiberti, Andrea del Castagno.
The other statues which were once in the Cathedral, such as one of the "Pietà" by Michelangelo, are now housed in the Cathedral Museum "Opera del Duomo". Not to be missed: the nearby "Campanile di Giotto" and a visit to the impressive Brunelleschi dome.
